Situated on the outer perimeter of London and bordering Hertfordshire there are an abundant amount of leisure and organised sporting activities in and around Northwood Hills. Below are just few;
Leisure Activities
Ruislip Woods and Lido Is one of the oldest woodland areas in London set in 726 acres. The woods are a National Nature Reserve and have a large complex of structurally diverse and species-rich ancient woodland. The Woods (Park Wood, Copse Wood, Mad Bess Wood and Bayhurst Wood where there are picnic facilities) have one of the most extensive oak/hornbeam coppice woods in southeast England. The site also includes acid and neutral grassland, ponds, streams and marshland.
The Lido was established some 200 years ago as a canal reservoir and with its beach and 12 inch gauge railway which borders the perimeter is immensely popular with local people.
Eastcote House Gardens www.eastcotehousegardens.weebly.com
Eastcote House Gardens are a lovely area to walk through to escape the noise and bustle of everyday life. Take a look at the web site
The original house is believed to have been built since before 1507 and was the ancestral home of the Hawtrey-Deane family from 1527 to 1930.
The local authority purchased the site in 1938 to protect its historical architecture.
The dovecote, walled garden and Coach House all remain but sadly the house was pulled down some years ago for fear of death watch beetle.
Highgrove House
Sadly it is no longer possible to tour the house which was rebuilt in the 1870s after a fire damaged most of the original structure. Highgrove House is said to have been the home of the Queen of Sweden during WW1 and also the place where Sir Winston and Clementine Churchill spent their honeymoon.
